# Where Do the Patient Experience and Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings Come From?

The [Patient Experience](https://www.medicare.gov/hospitalcompare/Data/HCAHPS-Star-Ratings.html) star rating produced by CMS and used in this report is based on the results of a survey ([Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems](https://www.medicare.gov/hospitalcompare/About/HCAHPS-Star-Ratings.html)) that is administered to adult patients across medical conditions between 48 hours and six weeks after discharge and is not restricted to Medicare beneficiaries. The [Overall Hospital Quality](https://www.medicare.gov/hospitalcompare/Data/Hospital-overall-ratings-calculation.html) star rating summarizes a variety of measures across seven areas of quality into a single star rating for each hospital. Hospitals report data to CMS through the Hospital Inpatient Quality Reporting (IQR) Program and the Hospital Outpatient Quality Reporting (OQR) Program. Visit the [CMS website](https://www.medicare.gov/hospitalcompare/Data/Data-Updated.html) for more information about the star ratings.
