Barbara Yondorf received the distinguished John K. Iglehart Award for Leadership in Health Policy during the recent Colorado Health Symposium at the Keystone Resort & Conference Center. The award recognizes a person whose wisdom, involvement and leadership have helped define and promote positive health care reform.
Yondorf served on the Colorado Blue Ribbon Commission for Healthcare Reform, an entity which presented five proposals for comprehensive health reform proposals to state legislators in 2008. She currently serves on the Board of the Center for Improving Value in Health Care, a nonprofit charged with developing and implementing strategic initiatives that will improve the health of Coloradans, contain costs and ensure better health care value. Yondorf also is a member of the board of the Colorado Consumer Health Initiative and consumer representative to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.
The author of numerous studies, reports and white papers on health policy, Yondorf served in senior management positions at the Colorado Division of Insurance, the National Conference of State Legislatures and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. Prior to starting Yondorf and Associates, a Denver-based health policy consulting firm, Yondorf oversaw the health grant-making program at the Rose Community Foundation.
“Barbara Yondorf is one of those special leaders in health policy who has credibility and strong working relationships with the full range of health care stakeholders,” said Stephen Shogan, MD, chair of the board for the Colorado Health Foundation, during the award presentation. “Her extraordinary influence comes from her rich breadth and depth of content expertise and professional experience, combined with an engaging, personal manner and a passion for the underserved and vulnerable.” Along with her professional accomplishments, Shogan noted that Yondorf has a rich legacy of “countless acts of kindness.” Among them, she generously devotes her time assisting those who are in need and those who struggle with the red tape, complexity and gaps in the health care system.
The award is named after John K. Iglehart, founding editor of Health Affairs, a health policy journal. In conjunction with the Iglehart Award, the Foundation will make a $10,000 contribution to a healthcare nonprofit of Yondorf's choice. "Hopefully, the work I’ve done has helped support the incredible consumer health advocacy and other health-related organizations we have in Colorado," Yondorf said upon receiving the honor.
The Iglehart award is a tradition of the annual Colorado Health Symposium, produced by the Colorado Health Foundation. In 2007, the award was established to recognize Iglehart's more than 20 years of dedication to the Symposium and his contribution to the health policy discussion. Past award recipients include William Lindsay, president of Lockton Companies LLC and chairman of the Blue Ribbon Commission for Healthcare Reform; former Secretary of State Bernie Buescher; Dr. Jay Want, now principal of Want Healthcare LLC; and Joan Henneberry, former planning director of the Colorado Health Insurance Exchange and former executive director of the Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Financing and currently a private consultant.
