The Center for Improving Value in Health Care Completes Transition to Non-profit

June 1, 2011 – DENVER – The organization appointed by the Governor to improve health care quality and contain costs in Colorado will operate wholly as a non-profit organization beginning June 1, 2011.

The Center for Improving Value in Health Care (CIVHC) was established in 2008 to create a healthier Colorado by promoting higher quality, lower cost health care. An Executive Order, signed by Governor John Hickenlooper on May 31, 2011, transitions all of CIVHC’s responsibilities as a government entity to an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

“We see this transition as the best of both worlds,” said Phil Kalin, President and CEO of CIVHC. “We will maintain our strong relationships with Colorado’s government agencies and policymakers. This transition gives us maximum flexibility to create and implement a roadmap to improve Colorado’s health care system.”

Engaging leaders from all sectors is necessary to create an efficient, high quality and transparent health care system that can improve the health of all Coloradans. CIVHC will work with its diverse board of directors and leverage its strong government relationships to improve health care experiences and contain rising costs.

From its inception, CIVHC was always intended to transition to a non-profit organization. CIVHC was founded upon the recommendations of the bipartisan Colorado Blue Ribbon Commission for Health Care Reform, under the leadership of Governor Bill Owens. The Commission acknowledged the need for a multi-disciplinary group to identify and advance strategies to improve health care quality and contain costs. In February, 2008, Governor Ritter issued an Executive Order creating CIVHC under the Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Financing. After establishing its leadership team, securing funding from foundations and forming a board of directors, CIVHC finalized its transition from a state entity to non-profit by Executive Order of Governor John Hickenlooper, signed May 31, 2011.
